Inmate dies after falling into cooking pan - NewsWire

Former Parliamentarian Ranjan Ramanayake has called on the Minister of Justice Wijeyadasa Rajapakshe to conduct an inquiry into the death of an inmate of the Angunukolapelessa Prison. 

The inmate had died due to burn injuries sustained after falling into a large cooking pot used to prepare meat for prisoners.

The prisoner who had been sentenced to death in 2001 after being convicted of murder was set to be released in 2028 after serving a term of 25 years.

Commenting on the inmate’s death, former MP Ranjan Ramanayake said that the prisoner had died after being taken to the Tangalle Hospital.

He further said that a request has been made from the Justice Minister to conduct a probe into the matter in order to ensure the safety of prisoners.

He further said a request has also been made from the officials of the Prisons Department to conduct an inquiry in this regard and to be aware of the conditions at prisons in Sri Lanka. (NewsWire)
